Samara Sheppard will be a world champion one day, according to her coach, Trevor Woodward.

The undisputed queen of the New Zealand junior women’s mountain biking scene, Sheppard added an Oceania title to her tally at the weekend. Without regular foe Monique Avery in the field, the Onslow College student was able to cruise to victory in the under-19 cross country race. Sheppard, who has a handful of national titles under her belt, posted a time which would have seen her win the under-23 title if she had entered. The 16-year-old once again was out on her own after she lapped the other competitor in her race, Kelly Hughes from Australia.
